There’s something special about rugging up in front of a morning campfire whilst hugging a hot cuppa, or snuggling in sleeping bags at night with someone special. If you’re in Victoria, or considering a winter adventure down that way, here are just some of our favourite cosy stays to check out.
Brooklyn Hill Tiny House
Craving a nature fix, but the thought of a swag heavy with morning frost leaves you chilly? Try this tiny house! Brooklyn Hill Tiny House offers a charming and comfortable camping-like experience, off-grid and in the midst of nature. A cosy bed (with linen supplied), wood-fired stove and hot camp shower give you all the camping goodness, without the goosebumps.
Brooklyn Hill is a working family farm on the banks of Broken Creek and surrounded by Murray River pines. It’s around 10-minutes from the small town of Nathalia. There are restaurants and country pubs a short drive or paddle away, with beautiful walks and fishing spots closer to camp.
The friendly hosts offer lots of toasty extras including camp oven breakfasts and dinners. Plus, they have the glamping tents, which can be set up near the tiny house or tucked away in an area closer to the homestead, as well as campsites for caravans and other self-contained campers. Great location for groups!
The Resting Place – Poets Paradise
Host Maurie is an award-winning bush poet and offers something rather special at The Resting Place. As well as rustic charm, open-campfire kitchen and hot showers to heat you up – Maurie’s poetry and hospitality will warm your cockles from the inside out.
This boutique camping setting near Corryong provides easy access to the Murray River, as well as spectacular views of the Alps. There are unpowered and powered sites for tents, campers and caravans, as well as a two-berth pop top caravan for those without gear.
A communal camp kitchen provides sheltered protection to mingle with other winter campers, whilst sharing a drink, a hearty meal and a tale around the open fire. Maurie shares his poetry and tales of the Snowy Mountains and will have you laughing, or bring tears to your eyes. And on the third Sunday of the month, you’ll warm up the feet with the acoustic music sessions!
Yarriambiance – “Mayfair v2.0” Tiny House
Another cosy tiny house option, Yarriambiance is located on the banks of the Yarriambiack Creek, 10 km out of Murtoa. The host’s definition of Yarriambiance is “A feeling or mood associated with fresh air, open spaces, big skies, stunning sunsets, starry nights, open fires and the sounds of nature, on the banks of the Yarriambiack Creek” and that’s exactly what you get.
Yarriambance offers an epic set up, perfect for a romantic winter getaway. The tiny house has a loft bed, gas hotplate, composting toilet, shower and wood-burning heater.
Whilst the tiny house sleeps two, you can extend the space with the option to hire a pop-up camper or a ‘tiny room’ extension for extra guests. Also on the property is a private creekside group campsite and a rustic cabin, so loads of options for a large group with varying levels of camping hardiness. Winter reunion at Yarriambiance anyone?
Set on 25-acres in the Strathmerton area, sharing its boundary with Barmah National Park and Kynmer Creek, is this gem of a camping spot. As well as sites to pitch or park by the tree-lined billabong, Chalford North offers a cosy camp shed, with double bed, fireplace, cooking equipment and solar lighting.
The large fire pit overlooking the billabong is the perfect spot to cook up a winter roast. You can also make use of the rustic camp kitchen nearby with gas BBQ. A wood-fired hot water shower and flushing toilet up the comfort levels.
With the Murray River just 2km away (it’s Murray winter cod time!) this spot makes both a great base to explore the region – horse riding, hiking, fishing and more. It’s also so well-equipped you can stay cosy at camp and finally finish that book, or finesse your winter campfire menu.
Dogs welcome but keep in mind the billabong is a popular meeting spot for emus, koalas, and other native residents. There are horse yards too, so options to bring your larger four-legged friends!
Garden Bell Tent at Kardella
Kardella is a 47-acre lifestyle farm within walking distance to the beach at Indented Head on the Bellarine Peninsula. With cows, goats, miniature horses and plenty of native birdlife, it’s a pretty picture of farm life.
The 5m Garden Bell Tent is tucked into a quiet corner of the garden, and comes with queen size bed, luxurious linens, in-tent tea and coffee, and carpet… Now that’s a winter camping novelty.
Whilst it may not be swimming weather, there is plenty of other things to see and do in this thriving coastal region, and Kardella makes a cosy and private camping-like base to enjoy the best of it.
There’s been enough hibernation already in 2020, so brave the outdoors this winter, even in the colder southern states!
