How it works
What is Youcamp?
Youcamp is the share economy for rural and regional Australia. It is Australia’s new favourite place for all types of accommodation and leisure activities on private land. We started in 2013 with the goal of opening up a whole new frontier of Australian tourism – letting responsible visitors enjoy the wonders of Australia’s private properties. On the other side of the coin, Youcamp has wanted to give landholders a whole new income stream and, importantly, another reason to sustainably manage the special places on their properties. In effect we are like a dating agency for landholders and guests.
What is “Land-sharing”?
Youcamp is part of the land-sharing economy, also known as the trust economy or collaborative economy. The share economy is about people dealing directly with other people. Youcamp is based on a very simple idea – there is lots of private land out there with incredible natural assets and even more who would like to experience a private land outdoors experience.
Sharing of private land isn’t new – farms stays, station stays and other small and large private land tourism businesses have been around for decades. Youcamp is just the first website to bring them all together – on one national website to make it easier for visitors to find an authentic stay.
Why private land?
Many people who head off to the great outdoors are looking for an experience that is particular to them. They may want a campfire or to bring their pets, escape crowds, find peace and quiet or make lots of noise. Commercial tourism sites are often developed to fit in a lot of people and have restrictions that can limit choice. Private landowners can set their own rules, which means that a guest has a greater chance of finding exactly what they want and where they want it.
Why would I even want to get out into the outdoors?
Because the outdoors is good for us! According to a recent study that reviewed over 60 studies from more than half a century of research found:
“76% of campers are satisfied with their quality of life compared to 59% of non-campers.
We were struck by just how significantly different the responses were to various questions concerning general quality of life between those who camp and those who have never camped. Over three-quarters of campers said that on an average day they are satisfied with their quality of life, compared to 59% of non-campers.”
“93% of campers said camping can make you feel happier. And nearly half of all non-campers agreed! The difference wasn’t just notable on the area of overall life satisfaction, but also in other aspects of wellbeing too. Campers were happier, more optimistic and felt more energised than non-campers, whilst those who hadn’t camped felt more stressed, frustrated, bored and lonely.”
It’s not just camping that makes us feel good! Fishing, bushwalking, horse riding, exploring, getting out of your comfort zone and challenging your 9-5, is what Youcamp is all about.
How do I use Youcamp as a guest?
Youcamp has hundreds of interesting properties to stay and play. On the homepage, enter the location you want to visit and then refine this search by number of guests, booking dates and the type of accommodation, activities, tours and amenities you’re looking for. You can make an informed decision based on photos, descriptions and property reviews. Once you have chosen a property you can either make an enquiry, request to book (some hosts want to know a guest before they accept a booking) or book instantly (some hosts prefer to reduce time and offer live bookings).
How do I use Youcamp as a host?
You create a free property listing by following a number of steps – property name and location, description, attractions, what you are offering (accommodation, activities, tours and extras), pricing and availability. You set any rules and conditions including a cancellation policy and choose how guests can make a booking. Guests will contact you to ask questions and to request bookings. Youcamp collects the payment upfront from the guest so you don’t have to deal directly with money. Your payout is made when the guest arrives or checks in.
You can choose the way you want to receive bookings:
Request to book (some hosts want to know a guest before they accept a booking)
Instant book (some hosts prefer to reduce time and offer live bookings)
If you opt for booking requests, it is important to know that you have 24 hours to respond before the booking request lapses.
Hosts are paid directly into a bank account of your choice. Your payout is sent within 24 hours of the guest arriving. You do not need to send us any paperwork or wait for payment at the end of the month. The payment is automatic and hassle free.
How long does it take to create a property listing on Youcamp?
Building your Youcamp listing is like taking a stroll down an interesting street! We have built our new property listing process to allow landowners maximum flexibility and to ensure they are able to list the various accommodation options and attractions that they offer. For properties with lots to offer, quite a bit of information will be required to build your listing.
We encourage hosts to firstly just run through the listing process, filling in only what is necessary to move through. This will give you a feel for how the website works and what is involved. At any time you can go back and add more photos, write more text, create more accommodation, activity and extra options. At first glance it may seem a little overwhelming, which is why we recommend to rough out your listing at first and then flesh it out before you publish.
